Beltzhoover – Early Thursday morning found an injured man who lost control of his pickup and crashed at the vicinity of Beltzhoover’s Duquesne Light substation.

Based on police record, the crash took place at about 2:22 o’clock in the morning of Thursday along East Warrington Ave. The driver alleged that he could not control his Toyota Tacoma that ended up sandwich between a building and a telephone pole.

Pittsburgh Police Lt. Bill Mathias reported that there was a Toyota Tacoma that slammed into the Duquesne Light power station down Block 100-block at East Warrington Ave. A police officer who was off-duty witnessed the entire incident.

Due to the impact, some of the power lines enlivening the telephone pole were affected so some of the residences lose power. Part of the Toyota was also ablaze.

Mathias said that the car hit the pole with such an impact that it knocked power out in Brookline.

The driver fled by foot from the scene, but he was easily captured a short time later by Pittsburgh Police. Authorities identified suspect as Dennis Cercone, age 27 and resident of McKees Rocks.

Police stated that Cercone was driving under the influence at the time of the crash.

The pickup wedged between the building and the telephone pole was finally freed eight hours after the accident with the help of a Duquesne Light truck and a flatbed.

Mathias said that it really appeared that the driver seemed to do the job purposely; the way the truck was placed between the poles and wedged it next to the building made it difficult to free the truck.

Cercone was delivered to the hospital for wounds suffered after he shattered the windshield with his head and face. Medical staff said that none of the wounds were criti8cal.

Cercone will be facing the following charges: (1) driving on a suspended license; (2) driving under the influence; and (3) leaving the scene of an accident charges.

It is human instincts to flee from danger. It is unfortunate that in many vehicular accidents that bring down power lines, natural inclinations lead to tragic results when persons try to run out of their vehicle.

Safe Electricity is cautioning drivers to know that if their cars hit a power pole, or otherwise bring down a power line down, the safest recourse is to remain inside the vehicle until the local electric utility men arrive on the scene and ensure that power has been cut. If a motorist witnesses an accident involve falling power lines and poles, do not get out of the car to approach the scene.

National Safety Administration and Highway Traffic said that more than ten thousand accidents happen each year where power poles are hit by cars or large equipment. Each of these accidents is potentially able to bring down the power lines. Surviving from an accident is no enough; to stay alive one must be aware which moves are right.
