A sharp downhill curve along East Main St. has been the scene of around nine accidents this year that included a horrible motorcycle crash last month. Officials of West Newton want to improve state safety of R-136 just at the border of South Huntingdon.

According to fire Chief Craig Sanner of West Newton more safety measured should be installed at the top of the hill. He told the council last Monday to improve safety of commuters at the top of the hill; at most to warn motorists going into West Newton to beware of a dangerous curve.

Although, there is a sign on that part of the road alerting drivers that the road is going downhill; still accidents continued.

Last September 30, a motorcyclist was killed in an accident that police identified as Scott A. Sparrow, age 31, resident of Pittsburgh’s Hazelwood section. Witnesses commented that he was traveling at full speed and was negotiating the bend in the road and crossed over to the eastbound lanes before proceeding over the hillside. Sanner stated that instead of lowering the speed of the motorcycle; the driver with one passenger, identified as Alexandra Barr, age 25, and also resident of Hazelwood, remained on the same speed.

Sparrow, the driver, was pronounced dead at the scene of the mishap, while Barr, his passenger was airlifted by medical helicopter to the General Hospital of Allegheny in Pittsburgh.

Borough secretary, Pamela Humenik, said that they are aware of the danger and she has written to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, asking them to conduct additional traffic to provide means to safeguard the site.

Humenik believed that better signage might alleviate the danger.

In another discussion, the council approved to borrow the sum of $20,000 to buy a new police car, which is a Chevrolet 2013 Impala, from Monroeville’s Day Chevrolet.

Members of the Council approved making partial down payment of about $10,000 for them to purchase a new Police car for the Twin Rivers Council of Governments.

Humenik said that the borough would be able to have the new vehicle by the end of the month and will help to augment safety of the site.

Further, the Council asked the borough’s street department to paint a pedestrian crosswalk along the area where the Great Allegheny Passage is crossing West Main Street, although the highway is maintained by the state.

According to Mayor Mary Popovich her greatest concern was for those motorists passing R- 136 across the Bridge of West Newton to slow down for trail-users crossing the road.

Popovich said that it seemed that nobody stops but they just go right through without any concern for their safety.

For other matters, the council also extended their contract with the Advanced Disposal of Somerset for the collection of residential garbage for 2014.
