Bessemer, Pa. — Both state police from Pennsylvania and Ohio state police are investigating and following the case of a two-vehicle crash that occurred in Lawrence County, There purpose was to learn the circumstances causing the crash, as well as determine who was responsible for injuring one person that was hospitalized.

State police reported that at about 9:00 o’clock that evening, a van carrying seven passengers was hit by another vehicle. The mishap took place at the corner of Main Street and West Poland Ave. in Bessemer, Pa.

State trooper arrived at the scene and discovered that the van carrying seven persons was struck by another vehicle and learned that one of the drivers of the colliding vehicle allegedly ran a stop sign.

One injured person was in critical condition so the victim was airlifted from the scene by helicopter ambulance to the Health Center of St. Elizabeth in Youngstown, Ohio.

Up to this writing, no information was given by authorities regarding the patient’s condition.

Troopers reported that among the seven passengers inside the van were two small children and a baby that fortunately were not injured.

Meanwhile, the officers at the scene are trying to investigate what could be the factor leading to the crash. They recounted the condition of the road, the weather, the machine and even considered distracted driving. For finding if DUI was a factor, the driver of the vehicle that hit the van was made to undertake a field sobriety test. He was later taken into police custody.

The Sobriety Standardized Field Test also known as SFST is a battery of tests of three that was given and determined in such a standardized manner to be used as a validated indicators of impairment. After the result of an establish probable, the presence of alcohol and/or drugs in the system will be a probable cause for arrest.

Both state police of Pennsylvania and Ohio responded to the scenes as the accident happened near the border of Ohio.

For the police officer on the scene requiring a driver take a BAC test or a chemical breath test to establish beyond reasonable doubt for charges of intoxication or DUI charges.

Suspected drivers will be asked to undergo one or more Field Sobriety tests. These tests are just simple physical tests that will determine if the operator is under the influence or capable of driving safely.

Legally, a Field sobriety test is not compulsory and there is no legal compulsion to submit to the tests. Refusing to take the tests, however, will probably not avert the driver’s arrest and may even make the arrest happen more quickly. In fact, the driver’s license can be taken or suspended for refusal.
