Speed kills as high speed was one of the major factors in a West Newton motorcycle wreck last Monday that caused the death of one motorcyclist and the injury of his passenger.

The coroner’s office of Westmoreland County identified the fatality as Scott Sparrow, age 31, and a resident of Hazelwood. He was riding his motorcycle along the corner of R- 136 and Quarry Way at about 5:30 o’clock in the afternoon when for unknown reasons, he failed to negotiate a right turn in the road.

According to the county coroner’s office, the cyclist veered across the center line then went towards the road going into a wooded area. Here, both he and his passenger were ejected from the motorbike.

Although, Sparrow was wearing a helmet it was not enough to protect him from the immense impact. He was pronounced dead at the scene at about 7:00 o’clock that evening, sustaining neck injuries that caused his death.

Investigator’s office said that his passenger, whose name was not made known to the public, was airlifted by medical helicopter to a hospital in Pittsburgh.

As the coroner’s office is awaiting toxicology tests result that will determine if the crash is due to alcohol or drugs.

Police confirmed that death of a man from Pittsburgh who was killed Monday while and his tandem was severely injured when his motorcycle collided with a car along R-136 in West Newton and the vehicle ran over side of a hill.

Deputy Coroner Tim O’Donnell said that Scott A. Sparrow, who lives in Renova St. in Hazelwood, expired due to life-threatening injury at his the neck. He died  on the scene at about 7:00 o’clock in the evening.

Sgt. Tony Gillingham of West Newton said that the passenger on the motorcycle was identified as 25-years old Alexandra Barr, also resident of Hazelwood. He was still in serious condition and airlifted by a helicopter ambulance to Pittsburgh General Hospital.

Sparrow was fatally injured when his motorcycle running west at the East Main St. crossed over the eastern lane passing the curve on the right along Quarry Way. It propelled to the south berm and hit the passenger side of a car traveling east before it descended and fell to a steep embankment for there is no guardrail; Gillingham stated that Sparrow and Barr were on the bike before it fell down the side of the hill.

The coroner said that one factor could have been speed that caused the motorcycle to crash. Both Sparrow and Barr were wearing helmets.

Gillingham said that the driver of the car going east, identified as Joseph Criss, age 53, of Monongahela, and was not harm in the crash.

Results from toxicology tests on the victim will not be available for several weeks, but will determine if alcohol and drugs were a factor.
