Pittsburgh – Monday morning started with a head-on-crash that injured one person. The mishap took place along Route 28.

According to officials who arrived at the scene, the crash occurred on the south side of the road at about 1:00 o’clock in the morning.

Initially, the vehicle was traveling northward when it entered the ramp running at full speed. The operator of the car told other witnesses that he met lots of traffic he could not avert so he was prevailed to cross the center line and was facing the oncoming traffic that caused him to hit a van.

Driver Ronald Weigner said that he on his way to his second job and was coming down Route 28 and the next thing he knew was that his vehicle was spinning 360 degree like circles. He said the crash was the result of a guy who crossed the median and led to this mess.

The driver was transported to the hospital but according to the medical staff he is expected to recover from his injuries.

After a few hours, traffic in both directions was reopened.

One of the most common types of road accident is a head-on collision where the front ends of two vehicles of any type as cars, trains, ships or planes crashed each other. It is distinct from a side collision or rear-ends collision. According to U.S. statistics show that in the year 2005, crashes of this type comprised about 2.0% of all crashes and about 10.1% of US fatal crashes.

Road traffic collisions, like the head-on type likely result to critical injuries and even to death. There are more injuries and death on the road. Belonging to the category are run-off-road crashes and sideswipes. They have similar causes although different in consequences.

A head-on or sideswipe collision results when the driver of a vehicle follows the center lane or gets out from the roadway, or go across the centerline. Sometimes, the vehicle is unable to avoid an oncoming traffic or a run-off-road crash on the far side of the road.

To prevent this type of accident, preventive measures include traffic signs & markings of road surfaces to guide operators through turnings, as well as getting away from opposing traffic lanes with wide central reservation or median and the use of median barriers to avert crossover incidents.

Median barriers are effective to use as physical barriers between different lanes of traffic, in both concrete barriers and cable barriers. These served as roadside safeguards in their own right, but dangerous when vehicles are traveling at high speed roads. The impact of the collision with a median barrier is usually lower than the seriousness of a head-on crash.
