A dirt bike crash claimed the life of an 11-year-old boy who suffered a head injury while practicing at the Derry Township track last Saturday afternoon.

The boy, who was not identified by the police, was airlifted by helicopter ambulance to the Children’s Hospital at UPMC after the crash at about 3:10 o’clock that day. He was doing his practice at the Motocross Park of Eight and Four MX near Stone Jug Road just outside New Alexandria.

According toTed Malik who is the Fire Chief of New Alexandria, the boy was with other 40 to 50 other dirt bike riders of all ages. They were allowed to practice at the dirt track during the open session.

No other injury was reported during the accident but Malik said that he was not informed if the boy was wearing a helmet.

The bikers continued their practice as firefighters were setting up the landing zone for the medical helicopter in a grassy area away from the track. Meanwhile, the Lifestat Ambulance from Saltsburg gave emergency treatment to the boy.

The son of Malik, who is also racing in motocross, said that there are ambulances stationed to look after the safety of sanctioned races, but during the open weekend practices, riders are responsible for their own safety and injuries.

He said that racers are required to sign a release form and they agree to practice at their own risk.

Two weeks ago, the fire department responded twice to injuries at the motocross park. Malik said that as riders get more confident, they are likely to become careless and usually end up getting hurt.

No other data was released regarding the extent of the boy’s injuries and his condition was not known.

Many people favored dirt bike as the best way to explore the outdoors. But it is not that easy as it could be dangerous. It depends on several factors as the condition of the environment, the quality of equipment being used and the ability of the rider to drive.

Today, there is a rising concern about riders of dirt bikes who often eluded police officers who would ticket them for riding in prohibited areas.

Another misconception pointed out by law enforcement officials is the belief that dirt bikes are like toys appropriate for children even without the proper training. Although some are especially designed for children, but even these vehicles have the capacity of running 30 miles per hour.

A Canadian study found that more than half of off-road accident victims were younger than 16 years old. Today, riders under the age of 16, comprised about 27%  of total injuries and as much as 20% of all fatalities.

Although bike dirt riding fun and even considered a safe activity that is enjoyed by millions; it can be dangerous for the following reasons: (1) unlike cars, bikes have little rider protection mechanics; and (2) unlike driving a car where a license and test are given, no official requirement is needed for bike dirt driving.
