PennDOT made a surprise announcement that the construction zone along Parkway West in the Carnegie area will be subject to nighttime closures. Since this construction zone in the Carnegie area has become a menace for both road workers, and drivers, this is the only remedy to ensure safety.

PennDOT’S District 11 Executive Dan Cessna stated since the project began last August, a dozen crashes in the work zone has occurred due to narrow lanes and some drivers do not pay much attention to what are going on around them. They have improved safety of construction zone during day; but at night, the single lane closures have resulted in some serious accidents, and lots of close calls.

Last Thursday, for a couple of hours, a rig jackknifed and caused a traffic jam in the inbound construction along Parkway West near Carnegie. This was a practical demo why PennDOT decided to close highway at night with exception of Sundays to facilitate completion of a projects that cost more than $72.83 million of dollars.

PennDOT and state police reported. That the wreck happened a little after 10:30 o’clock in the morning at the mile marker 64.8 mile at the intersection of Carnegie interchanges and Rosslyn Farms.

Due to the incident, all inbound traffic was halted and outbound traffic was made slow along the major artery midst Pittsburgh International Airport and Downtown.

Steve Cowan, spokesperson for PennDOT reported that after the trailer-tractor hit the barriers, it jackknifed, crashed the center barrier and along the way took out several of the barriers along the shoulder.

Police spokesperson, Robin Mungo said that no one was hurt; however, the traffic along inbound Parkway West was detoured into I- 79 south. Crews took time to clear the truck along the roadway and they reopened all lanes after12:30 o’clock noon.

Traffic authorities emphasized accidents and safety concerns especially for workers as the reason why they decided planned to close the affected portion of the highway every night of Thursday night when the crews fortify the shoulder of the highway. This is part of the resurfacing project for I- 376 between I-79 and the Fort Pitt Tunnel. The lanes are so narrow that it was not uncommon for mirrors of cement trucks to be smashed; workers to jump out of the way and there was even one worker’s heel clipped

Starting Thursday, Parkway West will be closed overnight permitting the weather. Outbound side will be closed Mondays and Wednesdays starting from 10:00 o’clock in the evening to 6:00, o’clock in the morning; and on Fridays, it will be closed from 10:00 o’clock in the evening until 10:00 o’clock in the morning. The inbound side, parkway closes every Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10:00 o’clock in the evening to 6:00 o’clock in the morning; and on Saturdays, it will be closed from 10:00 o’clock in the evening to 10:00 o’clock in the morning. All throughout Sunday nights, both sides will stay open.

In addition to the announcements, PennDOT warned that to avoid expected long delays, they have listed some possible alternate routes.
