Last Thursday, a Hyundai Accent and a Dodge Truck collided along the Iron Bridge Road that airlifted the injured the victim to a Pittsburgh hospital.

The victim was identified as Scott Johns, age 25, resident of Worthington who was trapped inside his Hyundai following a head-on crash with a 2500 Ram truck, operated by with 41-years-old Heather Layhew of Templeton.

State police stated the location of the crash site just about a mile after the crossing of Bridge Rd. and Troy Hill a little before 4:00 o’clock in the afternoon..

For unknown reason, Johns swerved towards the center line and crashed into the truck of Layhew. According to the report filed by Officer Matthew Woloszyn, tge impact of the crash was so much that Johns was trapped inside his vehicle.

Fire Chief Henry Bellas of Rayburn said that em crews cut him out of the vehicle but they have to work his feet out from under the dash just enough to free him.

According to a spokesperson from UPMC, Johns was airlifted by helicopter ambulance to the UPMC Presbyterian hospital in Pittsburgh. Based on medical report, he was in critical condition on Friday.

The other driver, Layhew was delivered by ambulance to ACMH Hospital in East Franklin and treated for minor injuries, Bellas said.

Responding to the call were emergency responders from: (1) Kittanning; (2) Kittanning Township; and (3) Rayburn.

Bellas surveyed the broken glass and twisted metals littering the road and he concluded it was indeed a violent crash.

The head-on collision took place before 4:00 o’clock in the afternoon along Iron Bridge Road near the corner of Troy Hill Rd.  The driver of the Hyundai 2002 Accent was Scotts John and he was seriously injured. Emergency crew has him airlifted by ambulance helicopter to UPMC Presbyterian.

The other driver was 41-years-old Heather Layhew, resident of Templeton. Sustaining minor injuries, she was transported to ACMH in East Franklin Township by Kittanning #6 emergency medical responders.

Johns is to be charged with not driving on the correct side of the road after the investigation is complete.

Being trapped in your own car after an accident is not an easy deal. Last June, a man from North Franklin was flown to the hospital after police saw that he was over speeding & driving past five vehicles and finally flipped over. The driver identified as Roger Miller, age 59, was pinned in his car after the crash. He was extricated from under his vehicle and airlifted to Pittsburgh hospital.

Police suspected that Miller was driving under the influence that caused his car to crash. Luckily, there no other person was injured. If Miller is proven to have been intoxicated, he will be facing stiffer penalties.
