At least, a male pedestrian from Pittsburgh was hit by a car along Brownsville Rd. in Carrick, according to local police report. The mishap took place along Block1600 block of Brownsville.

The man was immediately rushed to UPMC Mercy by first responder and is presently in critical condition; however, physicians believe that he will soon make a full recovery.

Police mentioned that the driver remained at the scene and cooperated with the authorities. But they have not released any official statement as to reason of the incident.

Hundreds of Pittsburgher residents are injured or killed yearly while crossing the street. Between 2006 and 2013 alone, there were already40 pedestrians who died following fatal car crashes. Although authorities have initiated and developed projects geared toward making crossing the street safer, accidents still happen.

Cited are two major reasons for this problem: (1) Pittsburgh’s complex landscape; and (2) limited traffic budget. Since Pittsburgh is located in the middle of a hilly terrain with three rivers, traffic engineers found it extremely difficult to construct safer roads for pedestrians. Lack of funds is also a vital issue. PennDOT installs equipment to alleviate dangers at intersection but the local government lacks funds to maintain safety structures as the city budget under state supervision are difficult to obtain.

Another factor delaying the development of more pedestrian-friendly roads is its growing population that places burden on Pittsburgh’s roads and intersection networks. With more people cramming into the city, Pittsburgh does not have adequate police force and besides the top priority of Pittsburgh Police is to answer 911 calls. There is not enough manpower to man risky intersections and to enforce traffic laws. They have started the challenging tasks of assigning agencies roles in assuming responsibility for pedestrian safety, and coordinating road improvement.

They have taken the major step towards improving the safety of crosswalks. For instance, the three-way intersection along the corner of Fifth and Aiken Avenues, formerly considered as number one most dangerous intersections, has been given major improvements. Last summer, one crosswalk was repainted and another was relocated. They have also decided to add countdown timers to the pedestrian traffic signals.

Though major upgrades may come slowly but similar problematic solution to intersections are on the horizon. For the next 2 years, PennDOT planned a major overhaul for East Carson Street as this area in Pittsburgh in infamous for car, pedestrians and motorcycle accidents. The amount of $4 million has been set aside for improvements that will go a long way in: (1) creating a pedestrian-friendly curb; (2) repainting crosswalks: (3) upgrading signals; and (4) re-paving the roads. The vision for the future includes a $900,000 improvement along East Ohio St., on the North Side and an allocation of $90,000 for Forbes Ave. in Oakland.

Pittsburgh officials are exerting efforts to prevent accidents; additionally, there are continually devising ways to ensure the safety of pedestrians and motorists.
