Pittsburgh – The female driver who crashed, hit and critically injured a school crossing guard in Penn Hills last Thursday was finally identified by authorities.

Police arrested Kristen Edgar, age 42 resident of Penn Hills as the suspect behind the wheel who was with her son, Alex, age 4, in the car.

She is now in stable condition in Forbes Hospital while her son after treatment of minor injuries was released.

The crash critically injured Kenneth Cleveland; age 68 who was the school crossing guard. Cleveland is now at the Forbes Hospital in serious critical condition and inside the intensive care unit.

The police are still perplexed why the accident happened and they are gathering evidences to file charges.

According to the Chief of Penn Hills Police, speed was the major factor involved the crash, but they are still looking for anything else affecting the crash.

Chief Howard Burton said that based on the interviews made with witnesses,  speed was a factor as saw vehicle moving at top speed along Hulton Road.

It was about 3:00 o’clock in the afternoon when the wreck happened in Hulton near the intersection of Saltsburg Road.

After the car hit the victim, it crashed into a utility pole and erupted in flame.

A Penn Hills officer ran to assist the victim who was knocked several feet down the street as the car caught fire. Alex and the child were aided to exit the burning car by James Scholtz who is Allegheny Sheriff’s Deputy.

Scholtz said that the lady driver was in shock while the child just kept asking for his mom. He was in good as he was strapped in well.

Chief Burton said that they are also are looking for mechanical problem with the car as the cause. An angle that they would look into was whether Edgar had any medical conditions that could have been another factor.

He said that they are still looking into all possible factors but they still have to question the driver to continue their investigation.

Meanwhile, the guard that was seriously injured in the Penn Hills mishap last Thursday is in the ICU of the hospital.

Ethel Cleveland narrated that she was waiting for her husband to pick her up when she heard about the crash. She is thankful that he came out of it; although her husband is in the intensive care unit Friday in serious condition but he is stable.

Her husband had started his job as crossing guard in the intersection of the streets for just three weeks. Parents of school children are hoping that Cleveland will soon make a full recovery.

The Penn Hills School District is working to get another crossing guard at the intersection.
