A district judge of Indiana County went on a paid administrative leave for she was charged for her alleged participation of a hit-and-run and obstruction of justice for a vehicular crash last September 13.

Jennifer Rega, age 41, resident of Blairsville is accused of operating a GMC sport utility vehicle that fled from the site after colliding with another vehicle at about midnight along a rural stretch in Rte. 286 in Cherry hill.

Charges filed are for the following: (1) careless driving; (2) failure to provide give information & render aid to the other vehicle; and (3) not notifying the police of an accident.

President Judge William J. Martin of Indiana County removed the judge from the bench four days after the collision; and this will remain till the case is fully investigated.

According to Police, the vehicle of Rega veered across the median line and hit the side mirror of a silver Chevrolet 2005 SUV with by a 39 years old female woman from Homer City behind the wheel. The Chevy was carrying two teenager passengers.

After the crash, Rega did not stop and give information or assistance to the other vehicle driver as required by law. Instead, she fled from the scene. The driver of the Chevy pursued Rega and was eventually able to catch up with her a few miles away from the site.

Cpl. Robert Joseph wrote this as a probable cause filed before George Thachik, the District Judge of Clymer.

Fortunately, no one was harmed in the mishap.

Joseph was told by the driver from Homer City woman and her passengers that Rega’s vehicle as swerving during the chase and never stayed in her proper lane at several points.

Upon approaching the driver side of Rega’s vehicle, the police and several witnesses saw several damages to the defendant’s vehicle, and they whiffed a strong smell of alcoholic beverage coming from the defendant’s car.

The Chevy driver told police that could hardly open her door Rega had trouble opening the door of her SUV, spoke in a slurred speech and acted disoriented after another driver stopped his vehicle to help out. Joseph wrote that prior to the result of the BAC, Rega us not facing alcohol-related charges.

While the Chevy driver was writing down the license number of the SUV, she told Rega that she is calling the police; there upon Rega drove away. However, the police was able to trace the vehicle to residence of the hit-and-run driver outside of Blairsville. The best evidence was the damage on her vehicle consistent with the description of witnesses.

The defense attorney of Rega said that her client is sending her apology for the incident and added that the incident happened during her private time while she was off-duty.

He said that as a judge in Indiana County and statewide, her reputation as a judge remains well-respected by the entire community. And her client is also entitled to due process.

The state Attorney General’s Office is handling the case with the preliminary hearing scheduled for next month. Meanwhile, Rega will continue to collect her $86,899 annual salary while on administrative leave.
