Pittsburgh – Three people were injured in a multi-vehicle crash Tuesday afternoon on the Parkway and one was a child passenger in a school van.

It was around 3:30 o’clock in the afternoon when the accident was reported. The scenario was in the Parkway splits where one way was going towards the Boulevards of the Allies and the other towards downtown Pittsburgh..

The investigators closed the Parkway going inbound from the exit 72 all the way towards the city as the crews were probing and clearing the scene.

Hovering over the Parkway scene, a Chopper 11 showed that there were already heavy backups at about 4:30 o’clock in the afternoon. The heavy inbound backups stretched until Squirrel Hill but at around 5:30 o’clock in the afternoon, traffic was moving regularly.

The child was taken to the Children’s Hospital at UPMC but the name, age and condition were not released by authorities.

Two other people were injured and taken to the General Hospital of Allegheny and like the juvenile; their names and conditions were not released.

Due to the crash along Parkway East also called as Interstate 376, long backups were build-up for inbound traffic around the Boulevard of the Allies at the beginning of the rush hours last Tuesday.

Among the vehicles involved in the mishap near Exit 72B in downtown Pittsburgh was a passenger van with a “school students”.

Witnesses saw one person taken away from the crash scene on a stretcher.

Passenger vans are the most common vehicles used by schools, churches, and other community organizations to transport large numbers of passengers and cargo. With so many of these vehicles prevalent in the roadways and their frequent use for transporting youths and children, most people assumed that the proper measures are guaranteed for safe travel. However, a number of design flaws in these vehicles are contributory to serious injury or death of passengers in these vans. Another factor on the downside is that most van drivers have not been given proper training on safely operating larger vehicles. Combination of these two factors makes those vans among the most unsafe vehicles plying the roads.

An accident sustained from a passenger van rollover accident can be especially scathing due to bigger and open cabin configuration and most of van passengers take the use of safety belts for granted. Victims of passenger vans usually sustained broken bones, burn injuries, head trauma and spinal cord injuries that likely lead to a disability for a lifetime.

Experts of transportation suggest that drivers of vans must be required to attend special training to realize the safety risks associated in driving the vehicles. The lives and safety of passengers are on the hands 9f the person behind the wheels.
